L2021.5 Release Notes

  • Dark

For a list of release dates and Sisense's end of support, see Sisense Life Cycle.

Release L2021.5 provides a number of new features and significant improvements to Sisense for Linux. For example, new and improved security features, new and improved API functionality, updates to Sisense Explanations (an AI feature), expanded support for Linux versions, improvements to the Sisense UI, performance enhancements, and more.

What's New

New CSFR Security Defaults

  • To improve security, from Sisense L2021.5, CSRF security hardening protection is enabled by default.

When CSRF is enabled, SisenseJS, Sisense Mobile, or Sisense embedded in iFrames will cease to work. To make sure that you can properly embed Sisense, disable CSRF in the Admin tab > Security Settings, see Cross-Site Request Forgery.

Connect to External Applications with SSL Certificates

  • You can now connect to external third-party applications (e.g SSO) from Sisense, using TLS, even if the SSL certificate used by that application is not in the NodeJS default trusted authorities, by adding it manually to the installation. (Read More)

New API Functionality

  • You can now view and access APIs that will allow you to programmatically configure “Simply Ask” Natural Language Querying (NLQ) to your needs. For example, you can see and control whether Simply Ask is enabled on a certain dashboard. The APIs can be found under REST API in the Admin tab.
  • For NLQ, you can now use a new API to control and keep track of the number of indexed fields used across all of your dashboards. This is useful when there are multiple Designers creating indexed fields and they need to comply with NLQ’s limit of 20 indexed fields across all dashboards in the Data Model. (See Querying Your Data with Simply Ask (NLQ).)

Explore Additional Dimensions with Explanations

  • Sisense now enables you to bring your own domain knowledge into the Explanations equation. In addition to the influencing dimensions that Explanations identified automatically, you can now select additional dimensions and explore how they affected your data. (Read more)

Linux Support

  • New support for Ubuntu 20.04 LTS (See Linux Minimum Requirements)
  • The Linux deployment YAML files include a cluster_visibility parameter to disable watching Sisense nodes that exist or are added to the cluster, and disable updating the logging system

User Interface

New Search Field for Admins

  • The new search field in the Admin tab enables administrators to search for settings. Using search is a faster way to find the setting or configuration you are looking for.

  • Implementing the CSI driver to work with Amazon EBS so Kubernetes nodes have permission to modify EBS volumes. With this configuration, the CSI driver automatically supplies the EBS disks Sisense needs. (See Implementing Amazon EBS CSI Driver)

What's Improved?

Performance Improvements

  • Large ElastiCubes running on local storage now take less time to download, extract, and restart.

Improved Default Security for Sisense File Management

  • By default, the File Management button on the System Management page is now hidden for new Sisense installations. Although the best practice is to hide the File Management button, Admins can decide to show the button by toggling on the feature. (Read More)

Improved APIs

  • Improved the description of the notify parameter in the REST API’s POST api/users endpoint.

Improved Support for Live Connections with Dynamic Connection Parameters

  • Sisense now supports dynamic connection parameters for Live connections, including reports and Pulse alerts. This improvement removes a previous limitation. (Read More)

Improved Copy-to-Server Functionality

  • You can now perform a simple procedure to enable the copy-to-server feature to work between two SSL-enabled environments. This improvement removes a previous limitation. (See Migrating Dashboards Across Environments.)

Funnel Add-on No Longer Included in New Deployments

  • The Funnel add-on is no longer included in new deployments because it is replaced by the built-in Funnel widget. When upgrading, the Funnel add-on will remain for deployments that are already using it.

Improved License Messaging

  • The “License Expired” notification in Sisense is improved for better visibility and prominence.

Upgraded File Management Browser

  • For increased security and supportability, Sisense has upgraded its web browser based file browser.
To use the file manager, go to the Admin page, select System Management on the left, and File Management from the menu. (Read More)

Improved CORS Functionality

  • With new Cross Origin Resource Sharing (CORS) options, users can enter domains in a white label list to work with HTTP requests from other domains.
CORS settings are needed when your browser's Same-Origin policy is set to restrict client-side web applications from receiving data from an outside domain. By enabling this, and adding your application to the list of approved domains, the communication is enabled to these domains.
To use the CORS functionality, go to the Admin page and select Security Settings on the left. (Read More)

Improved Pivot Table Functionality

  • Pivot tables can include images if there is a column with the images' URLs in the table's data model.
Along with the analytics for a series of products, you can show an image for each product and set the row height to accommodate the entire image.
Select the Show as Images option in the menu for the field that contains the image’s URLs. (Read More)

Additional Email Alert Selection Options

  • Allows Sisense Administrators to control when emails alerts, based on events, are sent to users.
A Sisense Administrator can enable Sisense to send email alerts when various events occur in Sisense. These alerts are helpful to users so they know when, for instance, Elasticubes or dashboards are shared with them.
Open the Admin page, select Email Settings, and enable alerts and a Custom Email Server. (Read More)

  • For using with a custom email server, there is a new Reply To option that allows you to enter a reply to email address that overrides the reply-to email across all of the system emails. (Read More)

What's Fixed

  • In some cases, when the configurations were set to not send account activation emails, the emails were sent anyway.
  • Nested folders (subfolders and files) didn’t upload to the new File Manager.

Dashboards and Widgets

  • When a dashboard was set to “view” and the data should have been hidden from users, the data was sometimes visible to users when they applied a filter.
  • Lines in Pivot Tables columns became misaligned when zooming out the view.

Data Sources and Connectors

  • When connected via a Live connection to a MySQL database that is a version earlier than 8.0, custom import queries failed.

Deployment and Upgrading

When installing Sisense offline, if the user wasn’t “sisense” the installation couldn’t be completed due to permission issues.

  • Jump to Dashboard not working on Mobile for Pivots.
